I was in a pinch to replace my 8 yr old 48" cut rider that I sold. Look at several other brands and found this to have the smoothest transmission. Like the other review, my only complaint is the traction in reverse. I think it is do to low end torque because of awesome Kawasaki 22 hp engine. I have been told these soft tires are designed not to tear your lawn when they spin, and they don't. This is the only reason why I gave the design a 4/5. From what I have heard, Kawasaki is the best engine out there and the 22 hp is more than enough. The competition at equivalent price was a 20 HP Kawasaki. I am 6'4 and fit well behind the controls. Others I had trouble with the control arms hitting my legs. I also liked the low center of gravity on this unit compared to all others. Hill sides were not a challenge as I have heard with ZT mowers.

I was concerned about cutting time by going to a 42", but it took me 1 hr exactly when my 48" rider with 21.5 hp took me 1.5 hrs on an acre. This was also just the first time I used the mower. I'm sure I'll get better as I get used to the controls.

I encourage you to refrain from buying any lawn mower from a big box store. Customer service with an independent dealer is much better, and you have the confidence the unit was set up correclty the first time.

This is my second ZT42. I returned the first one due to issues with skipping grass blades and missing strips. The dealer replaced it and now the replacement is doing the same thing. The problem gets worse with deck height at 3.5 inches. I have tried several suggestions for fixes with first mower and nothing helped.

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

This is my first time buying and using a zero turn mower. I couldn't be happier...it's actually fun to now go and mow the grass. I thought I would have a little trouble using the handle bars and keeping the mower straight but after a half hour I was a pro. Great power from the engine and the cut is awesome....my lawn looks like a major league ball field when I'm done with the way it cuts. I literally cut my mowing time in half with this machine. I went from a 30" mower to this 42" and that helped a lot, but the versatility with this mower is the key to cutting down mowing time as you don't ever have to stop, backup etc....Using the mower on side hills takes a little practice as you need to shift your weight a little to make the mower keep moving but that is the case for all zero turn mowers. I was going to buy a Toro, but I'm glad I listened to my dealer and bought the Gravely. Much more of a rugged design and nothing is cheaply made with this mower. 4 point deck is sturdy. Love this mower!!

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

I had a 42 in. Murray twin cylinder mower for 15 years. Yes 15 years. The deck became unrepairable. I alwasys wanted a Zero turn mower and now was the time to shop. After looking I came across a Gravely dealer and was shown a ZT 42 model. I purchased it and I am completely satisfied with the unit. After mowing the lawn the first time I was very pleased how even it cut. Best the lawn ever looked. Just hope it lasts as long as my other tractor. ZT 42 cut my 1.5 yard in one half the time.

I don't have a large yard yet cutting the grass is the last thing I want to do on a weekend or after work. This Gravely ZT 42 makes me want a bigger yard it's terrific.

First driving it had a lot to be desired yet in no time I had no trouble maneuvering the mower.

Also want to say that Joe's Power Center, where I bought this Gravely has been nothing short of helpful and knowledgeable before and after the sale.
I would make the drive to be treated so well in Kimberly Wis. Thanks to Joseph and the rest of the staff

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

I did TONS of research on all makes and models of zero turns to find the best fit for me. I don't like to buy cheap stuff so I knew I would be spending slightly above the market average to find a nice 42 zero turn. I look at the Deere, Husq, Toro, Hustler and of course the Gravely. I want a well built mower that will last a while and perform as well 5 years down the road as it did the day a bought it. Needless to say I had it narrowed down to the Hustler and Gravely, not much difference in the price, but build quality and warranty the Gravely had it all over the Hustler. The Gravely ZT 42 was closely built to the standards of the Hustler HD, so its a no brainer. With the quality of this mower, Kawasaki 21.5 hp motor, 3 blade deck, comfy seat and many more positives, I bought the Gravely and haven't looked back. Its done amazing work for me and highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new zero turn!!

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

I have had my ZT 42 for 3 weeks and cut my 1 acre lawn several times. There are many obstacles, I had always used a push mower since a riding tractor really would not save much time. The ZT 42 has cut time by 65%!
It takes some getting used to, to not gouge the lawn, but you definitely will get to the point where you no longer are damaging the grass...no sudden stopping or transitions from forward to reverse on either control.

Mechanical design and serviceability are great. One thing you will notice is that the frame definitely flexes on uneven ground. I assume this is not an issue on the heavier gauge ZT HD model which uses 10 gauge plate instead of 12

I like this machine

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

Gravely ZT42
Bottom line: My lawn looks really good after being cut with this machine. That is what counts. But the machine is expensive.

Previous problems: My old mower was a 38" Yard Machine tractor style mower. It did not produce an even cut, no matter how much effort I put into leveling the deck. It would not cut in reverse. You had to stop, disengage the PTO, shift to reverse, back up, shift to forward and re-engage the PTO. A royal pain.

My lawn: I have a 1 acre lot, but only about half of it is grass. There are "natural" areas all around the lot borders, with the house more or less in the middle. Nothing is geometrical. You cannot mow in a normal rectangular pattern anywhere. The lot is not level, but the slopes are not too steep. There is a drainage "dip" (shallower than a ditch) along the street. The Yard Machine mower was particularly bad on the slopes and in the "dip".

Performance: The cut is quite level and the lawn looks much better now, even in the "dip" and on the slopes. I almost bought the ZT34 thinking the narrower deck might cut more evenly, but the ZT42 does just fine. The machine cuts in forward and reverse, which makes maneuvering around the odd shapes of my lawn much easier. And the zero-turn levers mean you don't even have to shift the transmission to back up. Just pull the levers back. You never stop moving.

Dislikes: I might need more driving experience, but the rear wheels tend to gouge the lawn if I get too radical with zero radius turning. You need to keep both wheels moving and you really need to turn with some radius - not zero. However, you can make a two motion turn (half forward, half reverse) very quickly and easily that is the equivalent of a zero radius turn - without gouging the lawn. Don't really like the throttle and choke. You really can't tell how much choke is applied (pull up on the throttle handle - no scale) and the throttle itself is a bit stiff and hard to set. I like the gas filler and the oil drain (haven't changed the oil yet, but it looks like it should be easy). You have to keep both hands on the levers at all times. You have to stop to scratch your nose.

Overall, I am really happy with the machine. But my checkbook isn't.

Finally Got a Gravely

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

After growing up mowing behind a Gravely Model L ever since I could strap start it, I've wanted a late model Gravely mower. Finally in my sixties I've realized my dream. The ZT42 is Gravely's residential mower but next to the Greene and Yellow residential zero turn mower, it looks like a serious commercial mower. The dealer sold the mulching kit for cost and installed it and delivered the mower for no charge. Very pleased with the mower and dealer.

ZT 42 is the bomb!

By

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

I purchased the Gravely ZT 42 in Sept. 2012 and I love it. It is very responsive so you will need to pay attention when going to stop or turn. Use slow fluid motions to insure you don't damage grass. If you bring it to a dead spot it will slide the rear wheels. I have used the commercial JD models in the past and it came natural to me. The only thing I would change is the throttle/choke cable assembly. It needs to be made of cast metal to hold up. I just had to replace it but it was very quick and simple. I would recommend this mower to everyone! It cut my cutting time in half with even better results that the JD, Exmark, and Skag that was used when I had to pay to get my lawn cut. LOVE IT!!

The machine seems to be well built, after 2months my ZT50 seems to be humming along. i like the added welded braces & rollers on the stamped deck. (wish i could've spent the extra grand for the welded deck, but couldn't justify it) I mow nearly 2 acres with my house sitting on top of the hill in the center of my property, so i have pretty steep inclines on 3 sides of the property. we have had a wet spring so it makes the ZT kinda squirrelly for a firsttime zt'er...I think the front end could use a little more weight for my situation, but all-in-all....u do need an hour meter and a wash out connection on the deck..

We bought a ZT50 mower in 2011. We mow less than 1/2 an acre. In 2014 we had electrical problems. When we got it into the dealer we had bought it from, they said 'these mowers are known for that problem'. $75.00 later, and barely into this mowing season it seems to be starting to sounds like it might be having the same problem. Also, after less than 4 years of use, the frame broke, at the welds in the front, on both sides. The dealer chuckled when we told him about the frame, and then told us, we had bought the cheaper, bottom of the line model. I wish they had told us that when we purchased the mower. We did call Gravely to talk to them about our problems. They were very nice, and told us info about the warranty, that we had never gotten from the dealer. While we hope the mower can be fixed #we have spent a lot of money on it#, we will not be purchasing another Gravely. Disappointed in the mower, and even more in the dealer we bought it from.

Average Product, A Few Design/Defect Issues

Comments about Gravely ZT 50 Zero Turn Mower:

For the most part, when the mower is working, it's performance is good. However, I have had several issues, first with a choke cable that became disconnected and in process damaged. It took the dealer almost six weeks to get the part and repair the defect. Second, the throttle lever broke, and it's back in the shop, all under warranty, but just inconvenient. I would also mention that the two bag grass catcher accessory design needs some work. For the weight of the catcher frame, the support system, especially with grass filling in not sufficient and I have to keep tightening the hand screws constantly to alleviate the bags "flopping" from side to side putting undo pressure on the supports and the receiver which is screwed to the frame has broken, had to order a new one. I hope Gravely is listening.......

Nothing but problems from our Gravely. It's only 3 years old! When we have put it in the shop at the Gravely dealer, it has consistently come home with bigger problems than it had when we took it in. No mystery there.
I truly regret buying a Gravely and will not repeat this mistake.
With the cost of parts, it is not cost effective to even repair it. I actually wouldn't have even rated it 1 Star, but I had to put in something.

I'm loving the mower.
But I've been having trouble getting support from the local dealer; Bucheit's in Herculaneum MO. I tried to get them to order a mulch kit four weeks ago. They have still yet to get it in and have no idea when it will arrive.
Gravely's customer support site has been great. They told me the exact part number to order and I've bought it off the internet.
The cup holder needs to be on the other side away from the grass discharge chute. The top of the can was covered with small grass clippings.

My first experience at owning a zero-turn. Had the advantage of barrowing the neighbors Toro Time Saver and seeing the performance of another neighbors monster John Deere. Went shopping at the local equipment store to learn more about Husqvarna. Shop owner listened to my experience and service needs for a mower - Pointed me to the Gravely. Very happy with the decision. Has reduced my mowing time by 70%. The triple blade deck leaves a very nice cut. Solid design and construction.

I needed to get a riding mower to help me with our oversized corner lot. However, it had to fit through the gate of the wrought iron fence which encloses the back yard. This limited me to a width smaller than the vast majority of mowers. Because of numerous trees, hedges, flower beds, etc., I needed one with excellent manuverability, too. I found only three mowers that met the width requirement. Only one offered zero turn radius capability. That was the Gravely ZT34 and, as soon as I drove it around the parking lot at the retailer's store, my mind was made up. I never thought I would say this but now I actually look forward to mowing! It is just plain fun to drive my Gravely and I am always disappointed when I have to put it away. [I even proudly insist that everyone who visits try it out and It never fails that within the first 15 feet and a turn or two, their faces light up with a big grin.] My only wish is that it mulched better. But for that, I'd give 'er 5 stars for sure!

This was my first new mower purchase and my first Gravely. My acre and a half yard is uneven with both rises and ruts. It's a rough cut but the Gravely does a fine job. I have had it for three years and other than PM all I have had to do is replace the blades. It cranks every time and cuts no matter how high the grass gets. My neighbors, having seen the performance of my Gravely, have made the decision to purchase their own when they replace their current mowers.

I purchased a Gravely ZT34 in July 2014 after using Snapper riders & a mower for the last 31 years. I still have my 31 year old push mower, with a lot of newer parts. As for the riders, they were always used & rebuilt. They were good products until they changed the design and quality of workmanship. I needed a small footprint rider or ZTR and cost was a major factor. I do several yards for my 'older' friends that cannot maintain their yards. That got me looking at ZTR mowers and the Gravely stood out for me. With this ZT34, gates are not an issue. I wish I had purchased this mower years ago. My cut time on one of the yards was cut in half. All the other yards time was reduced by 33%. I love the way I can mower even the smaller tight yards in about 10 minutes without the need for the push mower. On the larger lots, it is a lot faster that the old standard rear engine riders (RER) I had. Just because it is a 34inch cut does not mean it cannot get the job done faster. My older riders were 30 & 33 inch models and this Gravely is a dream to use. The cut quality is also better than the RER models. The ZT models maybe designed for the home owners, but the quality of cut, workmanship, and price is perfect for the non-commercial yard cutter.

Comments about Gravely ZT 34 Zero Turn Mower:

Well I spent a few weeks researching which ZTR mower I wanted to buy, read reviews, researched websites, test drove mowers, etc. Came down to the Dixon ZTR 30" and the Gravely ZT 34". Both were the same price so it was just a matter of deciding in my own mind which mower gave me more for the money and quality overall. Test drove both mowers but did not cut with either one. Ended up picking the Gravely ZT34 for a few reasons. It was a wider cut but not much wider overall which I liked since I did not want to take up too much room in my garage. Had two blades vs. one blade, more controls, and just seemed to handle better. Bought the mower today and I literally could not stop cutting my grass, cut both my front yard and back 3 times playing with the settings and mowing patterns all still in a shorter time than it normally takes me to mow with my push mower. Cant wait for the grass to grow so I can cut again. Will probably cut my yard at least twice a week now because it so easy. Did not even need to use my push mower afterwards, was able to catch all spots with my ZTR. Finished up with my weed eater. Love the machine and highly recommend it!! Happy Mowing !!

Comments about Gravely ZT 34 Zero Turn Mower:

I've recently moved to a house that has about a half acre lawn with quite a few live oak and red oak trees. I knew I didn't want to cut that large area with my 21" push mower. So I started researching my options and quickly narrowed my choices down to a zero turn mower. Another problem was cutting width. I was limited due to a couple of gates on the property. So my choices were restricted to cutting widths in the 30" range. So I looked at Toro and Snapper. Both mowers were set up with similar HP Briggs and Stratton engines. Both were a single blade design which seemed fine but I heard these designs sometimes have problems with uneven cutting. I was not able to test drive these mowers. So an Internet search brought me to a local tractor dealer and they specialized in Gravely products. I went there one day and learned that the ZT 34 uses twin blades and the width would allow me to pass through the gates. I was also able to test drive the mower. They also offered 0% financing for 48 months. At this point I was sold on the Gravely mower. Since purchasing it, I have used it three times and it's a wonderful machine. The 16.5 B&S motor has ample HP and it's a breeze to operate. There was a little learning curve in driving it, but I'm pretty comfortable with it now. I've noticed you have to be careful when making turns so divots don't form in the grass. I can mow the yard, front and back, in 50 to 60 minutes which is more than acceptable. The cut is nice and even also. I'm happy with the decision to buy the Gravely brand.

I had to have a machine that fit my yard and three gates. The ZT 34 worked just fine. I had checked on several other models but came back to this one for what it did for me. I did not have to move gate post or build bigger gates. Mowing time down 50%. Learning to drive was really fun and I look forward to mowing . A strong well built machine.Highpockets

Comments about Gravely ZT 34 Zero Turn Mower:

I purchased this the ZT34 for a couple of very good reasons. Number one being I've been dealing with Rheumatoid Arthritis for 7 years and riding my conventional mower was a bad experience. Shopping for my first ZTR was something I took my time with, and I always kept coming back to Gravely.
Which brings me to my second reason for puchasing the ZT34. By far and away its got absolutely the best features and ease of use design of the many mowers I looked at and researched. A few but not all are:
Foot operated deck lift with deck height adjustment that works as advertised...
Large (for me# fuel tank...
Dependable B&S engine with spin on oil filter...
I've got a great cut with the twin blades #had the dealer install the mulching kit)...and in South Louisiana St. Augustine grass really grows.
Thanks Gravely!

Comments about Gravely ZT 34 Zero Turn Mower:

This is a great mower and has served me well for the approximate two (2) years since I bought it. It survives the winter dormant period well and fires up in the spring with little problems. Cutting performance is excellent and blade height adjustment is a breeze. The only two issues I have incountered are; one, the twin blade occasionally leaves some uncut areas as the center of the mower deck passes over, especially when cutting grasses like Bahai. Two, if you are not extremely careful you can spin the rear drive wheels and rut your yard as you manuever. Overall this is a solid mower. I have owned Toro, Snapper, Yardboy and Craftsman, but this one is the best. Recommended.
