The Influence of Social Media
Jim Nelson, Gravely Ambassador
I started mowing lawns when I was 12 years old so I could buy baseball cards. I spent 20 years in the army and 12 in law enforcement before I realized I missed mowing. It’s my passion and I love seeing the finished product. Hearing a customer say their yard looks beautiful makes the work worth it.
When I first started my business, I gained most of my customers from word of mouth. All the operational costs began to add up, so I didn’t have much left for advertising. I thought it would be hard to acquire customers, so I only ran one classified ad. It turns out that acquiring customers wasn’t as hard as I thought and now, I have a waiting list.
I believe in posting the products I use on social media so others are aware of great products, and I don’t post anything on my page that I don’t use. I’ve always used Gravely, so I applied to be an ambassador and now I’m in my third year with them. Their products are great, and I love being able to tell people about them through social media.
I never thought about using social media, in fact, I never even let my kids have social media. But after my kids started using Facebook, they told me I should make a business page. I decided to just post some photos and shortly after I created an Instagram account, I created a TikTok account and gained 14,000 in only five months.
Now, I love social media and I have a ton of fun with it. I’m able to network with people from all over the world and give them advice while getting some advice from them. I post a lot about outdoors, building, construction and then about myself every so often.
I love what I do, the impact I’m leaving and seeing a happy customer after a hard day of work. Businesses are too often chasing the dollar, I’ve learned if you treat people right, the dollar will follow.
