I was in a pinch to replace my 8 yr old 48" cut rider that I sold. Look at several other brands and found this to have the smoothest transmission. Like the other review, my only complaint is the traction in reverse. I think it is do to low end torque because of awesome Kawasaki 22 hp engine. I have been told these soft tires are designed not to tear your lawn when they spin, and they don't. This is the only reason why I gave the design a 4/5. From what I have heard, Kawasaki is the best engine out there and the 22 hp is more than enough. The competition at equivalent price was a 20 HP Kawasaki. I am 6'4 and fit well behind the controls. Others I had trouble with the control arms hitting my legs. I also liked the low center of gravity on this unit compared to all others. Hill sides were not a challenge as I have heard with ZT mowers.

I was concerned about cutting time by going to a 42", but it took me 1 hr exactly when my 48" rider with 21.5 hp took me 1.5 hrs on an acre. This was also just the first time I used the mower. I'm sure I'll get better as I get used to the controls.

I encourage you to refrain from buying any lawn mower from a big box store. Customer service with an independent dealer is much better, and you have the confidence the unit was set up correclty the first time.

Was sweet...right up until the frame broke

Mowed awesome for 2 years, then the front axle literally broke off. I've seen swiss cheese that was tougher then this frame.

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

Before the welds broke on the front support bar, the mower was good. However, I was just told by the dealer that Gravely will only cover the parts but not the labor! Obviously, if you are covering the parts, then you recognize something is wrong but not to cover the $450-600 labor cost is ridiculous!

Comments about Gravely ZT 42 Zero Turn Mower:

Rick from Tampa 2/1/2015 follow up: It has been 2 years since I purchased the ZT 34 and just 3 oil changes and a 2 sets of blades is all the investment I have had done. I am running ethanol free fuel and it starts up every time, even after sitting 3 months for winter. As for usage, my mother in law get comments on how her yard looks, my friends get a kick when I do my post stamp yard (50 X 60) in 10 minutes, and my 80 year old friend loves the results the mower leaves on his yard. I have been approached to 'take over' other yards but I am not in the business. The mower has over 100 hours on it now, and it still looks brand new.

The weather in Tampa is mostly hot with showers during the PM hours. Our lawns can grow 4-6 inches in a week, unlike that in the northern states. We cut yards 42 weeks a year here. The mower has handled a few yards that had not be cut in 3 weeks and cut thru it with easy. I am super impressed with the Gravely and a lot of yard cutters are switching to Gravely from Exmark & Toro. Gravely has giving me a mower that cost reasonable with the quality of a high mower.

Leaked oil from day 1 and dealer charged me pickup and delivery fee to fix it. You can feel the mower flex as you mow. I tried to upgrade to the XT HD, but the dealer low balled me and this was after 2 hours of use.

The machine seems to be well built, after 2months my ZT50 seems to be humming along. i like the added welded braces & rollers on the stamped deck. (wish i could've spent the extra grand for the welded deck, but couldn't justify it) I mow nearly 2 acres with my house sitting on top of the hill in the center of my property, so i have pretty steep inclines on 3 sides of the property. we have had a wet spring so it makes the ZT kinda squirrelly for a firsttime zt'er...I think the front end could use a little more weight for my situation, but all-in-all....u do need an hour meter and a wash out connection on the deck..

We bought a ZT50 mower in 2011. We mow less than 1/2 an acre. In 2014 we had electrical problems. When we got it into the dealer we had bought it from, they said 'these mowers are known for that problem'. $75.00 later, and barely into this mowing season it seems to be starting to sounds like it might be having the same problem. Also, after less than 4 years of use, the frame broke, at the welds in the front, on both sides. The dealer chuckled when we told him about the frame, and then told us, we had bought the cheaper, bottom of the line model. I wish they had told us that when we purchased the mower. We did call Gravely to talk to them about our problems. They were very nice, and told us info about the warranty, that we had never gotten from the dealer. While we hope the mower can be fixed #we have spent a lot of money on it#, we will not be purchasing another Gravely. Disappointed in the mower, and even more in the dealer we bought it from.

Comments about Gravely ZT 50 Zero Turn Mower:

Replaced a 1995 Honda rider with this mower. We use this mower to mow around trees mow banks and keep hours off our other Zero turn. We have around 1.5 acres of slightly hilly yard with some steep road banks and this mower works well for all my needs.

There are things that I like and things I dont and this is just my opinion or my likes and dislikes as the other Zero turn we have is a mid range 60" cut machine that we have had for 6 years and has served us well.

The controls require little movement to run and steer which I dont like, I like a little more travel. I love the foot control deck as most in this price range are hand adjustable. The park brake is in a good spot for me and easy to use. The engine has very good power and mows tall grass well. It did develop a small leak at the drain port where it goes into the engine block in the first few months but so did the Kawasaki powered engine we have on our other mower. I would like to see an Hour meter but not a big deal to add one. It is light weight and could stand a little more weight to mow the slopes but i get around by using angles to attack difficult areas I have to mow. The frame does twist and flex but it is not a solid tube like the more expensive machines and so did the old rider we had. If mowing tall grass the deck does leave a thick row of grass right out of the chute about two inches wide But all and all it disperses grass pretty well and cuts well. The ride of this mower is a little rough but my yard is rough in spots and in the smooth spots it rides pretty well and the seat is comfortable for a cheaper seat.

All And all I like this little ZT 50. We got a good deal on it from our dealer. I knew when I purchased this mower what i was getting. It is NOT a sold frame, Heavy duty, manufactured deck, $5000+ dollar Zero turn. With that said it is a good entry level machine that if taken care of should give good service life.

Comments about Gravely ZT 50 Zero Turn Mower:

For the most part, when the mower is working, it's performance is good. However, I have had several issues, first with a choke cable that became disconnected and in process damaged. It took the dealer almost six weeks to get the part and repair the defect. Second, the throttle lever broke, and it's back in the shop, all under warranty, but just inconvenient. I would also mention that the two bag grass catcher accessory design needs some work. For the weight of the catcher frame, the support system, especially with grass filling in not sufficient and I have to keep tightening the hand screws constantly to alleviate the bags "flopping" from side to side putting undo pressure on the supports and the receiver which is screwed to the frame has broken, had to order a new one. I hope Gravely is listening.......

Great to deal with people that have sold lawn equipment for 30 years. For a mower from the lower end of thre Gravely line this thing is solid. Hope to have for many years.

I had to have a machine that fit my yard and three gates. The ZT 34 worked just fine. I had checked on several other models but came back to this one for what it did for me. I did not have to move gate post or build bigger gates. Mowing time down 50%. Learning to drive was really fun and I look forward to mowing . A strong well built machine.Highpockets

Horrible mower should have stuck with a Toro brand. Leaves grass uneven. No where near what I expected. Especially for the price. I will be contacting dealer asking for a refund. please try out before u buy. Won't start with turn of key you have to choke it. Crazy for being brand new. Also has no traction.

This was my first new mower purchase and my first Gravely. My acre and a half yard is uneven with both rises and ruts. It's a rough cut but the Gravely does a fine job. I have had it for three years and other than PM all I have had to do is replace the blades. It cranks every time and cuts no matter how high the grass gets. My neighbors, having seen the performance of my Gravely, have made the decision to purchase their own when they replace their current mowers.

Comments about Gravely ZT 34 Zero Turn Mower:

I purchased a Gravely ZT34 in July 2014 after using Snapper riders & a mower for the last 31 years. I still have my 31 year old push mower, with a lot of newer parts. As for the riders, they were always used & rebuilt. They were good products until they changed the design and quality of workmanship. I needed a small footprint rider or ZTR and cost was a major factor. I do several yards for my 'older' friends that cannot maintain their yards. That got me looking at ZTR mowers and the Gravely stood out for me. With this ZT34, gates are not an issue. I wish I had purchased this mower years ago. My cut time on one of the yards was cut in half. All the other yards time was reduced by 33%. I love the way I can mower even the smaller tight yards in about 10 minutes without the need for the push mower. On the larger lots, it is a lot faster that the old standard rear engine riders (RER) I had. Just because it is a 34inch cut does not mean it cannot get the job done faster. My older riders were 30 & 33 inch models and this Gravely is a dream to use. The cut quality is also better than the RER models. The ZT models maybe designed for the home owners, but the quality of cut, workmanship, and price is perfect for the non-commercial yard cutter.
