First off I want everyone to know that I have done my research. My wife asked me if I was going to submit my data to Consumer Reports... I wanted this mower to be the last one I purchased. I have looked at SCAG, Hustler, Cub Cadet, Husky, Exmark, Simplicity, John Deere, Dixie Chopper, Toro and the list goes on...

As I searched for the best manufactured machine for the best money I learned and I learned... All the manufactures will use components from the same or similar manufactures such as engines, the trans axles are primarily manufactured by Hydro-Gear etc... Understand that the best for the money will never be the cheapest. I also looked at the companies behind the mowers and continued to learn...

Overall I looked at many machines... I demoed many machines... In the running with my criteria I ended up with the following brands... Order not relating to preference.

Dixie
Gravely
SCAG
Hustler

Without getting into the process of evaluation this is what I found to be the deciding feature requirements...

Kawasaki Power
24HP will be plenty for a 48" machine
Trans Axle minimum: Hydrogear ZT-3100
Mower Deck: Minimum of a 10 Gauge fabbed deck great mowing capacity not overkill for a homeowner.
Must be able to push snow if desired.
Warranty: Minimum of 3 yr.
Dealership... What if I had to deal with the what if...

The SCAG Dealer was the closet in the overall, but I feel it was over priced for the same HG ZT-3100 and also power by a BS engine... Thats Briggs and Stratton! BS not intended but by far the last on my list... They also offer the Kawasaki 600cc engine... $1100 more for the 48" unit with this is engine that is 126cc smaller and the HP is unpublished. The deck was a little thicker, but I felt overkill for a homeowner which has no additional warranty such as the Gravely

Dixie Chopper was a great machine, but I couldn't justify the cost for what I was getting. The Briggs Pro engine (again not my favorite) and the HG ZT-3100 transmission same as the Gravely... Better Warranty, but much higher in cost... Same dealer as the Gravely

The Hustler dealership seamed untrained on product and just wanted to jam a mower out the door. I felt that there was an urgency as if he needed to sell a unit just to stay in business. I like the product but again higher in cost for the same or similar product. Warranty was a year better, but I was very concerned with the dealers existence in that extra year...

Gravely 48" ZT HD had all the features in a single package that I was looking for and I felt that it came at a fair price. And after all the facts and information was entered it came down to the dealer, salesman, and their shop. I felt that the Gravely dealer was had it together the best of all. I felt confident in with the whole package.

I will also add that I have been in sales for 25 years and now manage several states. I told all the dealers that I enjoyed looking at my lawn not mowing it... My lawn wasn't that big... I didn't need a ZTR I wanted a ZTR, I wanted to be done as quick as possible... With the proper manual I could rebuild any engine that I wanted to, but I didn't want to wrench on a mower... I want a high quality mower that would last...

None of the dealers that I had visited had any idea that they we undergoing an evaluation by an experienced salesperson... I was just a home owner that wanted a great product for a fair price. Most noticed that I had done my homework and was knowledgeable about what I was looking for. There was only one dealer seamed like they cared and wanted to build a relationship. It was 100 degrees and not a lot of grass was growing. They were only one dealer offer me a pepsi while I was talking to them... Who knew that $. 50 that pepsi would sell a mower! That being said I bought a relationship and they through in a Gravely mower... I want to add that I never met Ryan or knew the family before, but I imagine that Ryan's great grandfather would be proud to know that his great grandsons is doing business as he did when they started, With a handshake and trust! I don't know many that can say that. I made the purchase of the Gravely 48"ZT HD at Schaefer's Indiana Turf.

I purchased this mower as an occasional use light duty commercial unit. After only 2.8 hours, the hydros failed and the largest Gravely dealer here in my city of over a million people is telling me if will take a week to get parts. This ZT HD 48 is quite a disappointment. The cut quality for the 2.8 hours I was able to use it was not what I hoped for and in no way compares to the quality of my real commercial mowers. I will be selling this mower as soon as possible and replacing it with anything but another Gravely. I tried Gravely, but will be sticking with John Deere and Scag. I will say the unit is designed nicely, with a durable frame, large tires, and a great seat. My 23 HP residential grade Kawasaki feels underpowered at times. If the hydros didn't fail, the motor had more power and the cut quality was better, this would be a good mower. I also don't like the way the steering arms don't lock the wheels when pushed out like other brands. Parking this thing on an incline is almost impossible and requires lightning fast reflexes to pull the parking brake why feathering the throttle.

Well if you read the older reviews you will see I've updated my review several times since I've owned this unit bought new in 2010. I now have over 3000 hours on my zthd60 and have broken the deck. The unit has been fantastic and never let me down, but the crack that developed last year went all the way around the pulley and literally fell off. I ordered a new deck because I was told it's out of warranty for $500. Other than belt guard bolts falling off the deck has been my only issue with the mower since my last review. The welds that hold parts of the front of the deck broke around 2000 hrs but the mower was still cutting decent. I'm moving up to a used pro turn 400 as soon as I find a good deal on one. I'll start reviews on that unit once I acquire one. Overall it's been a good 7 years with the zt series. I probably run mine harder than most. Keep up with the maintenance and they will run for a long time.

I went from a 42 inch Dixon mowing about 3 acres to this beast. This thing is a Cadillac compared to what I had before. This is the first brand new mower that I have ever bought and I am glad I went with gravely. I love the large rear tires along with the large front tires. Overall I am very happy with this mower. I love the tough welded deck on this thing. The only thing I don't like about this is you can't buy an air ride seat for this model. My yard is a bit bumpy so I wish they had that option but it is not a deal breaker. I would definitely recommend this mower to others.

I bought this ZT 52 HD in the spring of 2011 after researching and looking at several similar models. The salesman sold me on this unit with the commercial grade build of the unit and the turbo bagging kit availability. I live on a old farm with about 5 acres of lawn and walking paths to maintain, some of it smooth but some bumpy. The first three years it delivered good reliable service with only the scheduled maintenance. The fourth year the governor to throttle spring failed at the end that hooked to the throttle lever leaving mower stranded 400 yards from the house till I could jerry-rig the broken spring enough to use. Year five the hydro drive belt chunked and changing it was a fair amount of work even for me (30 years as an auto mechanic). Then later that same year the left Hydro unit started weeping oil from the inspection cover which turned out to be a failed gasket, which I had the dealer service department replace. While not a pleasure to deal with these items failing they were not out of the realm of expected repairs. Unfortunately this year half way through the mowing season and with no warning the right frame rail broke in two just forward of the seat and the left rail is eighty percent split in the same area. For a $6,000 plus mower, when new, and promoted as commercial grade, this is unacceptable durability to my thinking. I only have put 570 hours on it, to date, and depending on whether my friend who is a professional fabricator and welder can fix it, I may have to buy a new mower. Without a better warranty or a substantial discount in price, I doubt I will buy another Gravely.

I reviewed zero turn mowers for 2 years before I decided on the ZT HD 52. I have approx. 3.5 acres with lots of trees and uneven terrain. I have owned the gravely for approx. 1 year, it has exceeded all my expectations and preformed flawlessly. This thing is beast and I love it!!! With the investment made and the expected durability, the most important thing you can do as an owner is proper maintenance and maintain sharp blades for an even cut. After each use, I clean the underside of the mower deck and rinse the remainder of the mower and make sure the drive train is free of debris.

This is the first Zero Turn we have owned, however we have family members with a Ferris, and another with Skag and we are very happy with this Gravely. It was easy to learn how to use a zero turn, and it cuts our two+ acres in short amount of time and with ease. We would recommend this mower to anyone looking for zero turn that durable and yet comfortable to use.

Comments about Gravely ZT HD 52 Zero Turn Mower:

My Gravely ZT HD 52 is a beast, easy to maneuver and powerful, that's why I call it the beast. Cuts through any height grass. A couple things after mowing my 5 acres twice. One, it's loud, I have a rattling sound coming off the mower deck left belt cover which the dealer says he can't reproducer. Two, it cuts unevenly, leaving some tall grass scalped but not evenly cut. If I drive real slow then it cuts more evenly but not always. If I was using for anything but my own lawn I'd be in trouble. Other than that I am satisfied with the unit.

I bought HD 48 last summer when I moved into a house that had a 2.25 acre lot. Although I only have 17 hours on the mower, it has performed as advertised, AWESOME. I debated on getting a Gravely or Exmark and after talking to some friends who had both, my decision was easy. I'm not putting down Exmark, but I went to the Exmark dealer and the Gravely dealer and asked alot of questions. Hands down I am very happy with my Gravely ZT HD 48.

Lawn maintenance solo operator with 40 residential accounts. I broke two hydro idler tension springs within first 6 weeks of purchase. My dealer told me Gravely informed them this spring was defective. I lost $250 in tow bill to have mower towed to dealer and more lost revenue from second spring failure. Gravely rep was sympathetic but refused to reimburse me for $250 tow bill. Didn't get a replacement spring for a month. Gravely is not service oriented and doesn't care about the "little guys" like me. Will never buy a Gravely product again.

I got a great deal on a new 2015 model and I love it. It cuts so fast it's a blast to mow. The only problem I have with it is that the deck is so flimsy. I noticed the paint cracking in a few places but didn't even think it was the deck itself until the right spindle fell out on the ground. Had it welded back up and my welding guy had to weld all the way around the center spindle and 3/4 around the left spindle and in about 6 other spots. 5 year warranty on the deck? We'll see.

2.5 hours, best lawn purchase I've ever made. I cut about 3/4 acre of St Augustine. I've owned a JD 155c and a toro ZT, those two mowers together can't do what this mower does. I'll come back once I've put some time on it, for now don't hesitate to buy this mower.

Decided to purchase a zero turn to replace a cub tractor that I was never really happy with. Looked at 6 different manufactures in this price range and after comparing warranty, construction and engines felt the Gravely HD 48 definitely stood out from the rest. This mower has reduced my cutting time by nearly half ! My yard is far from being a manicured golf course . The HD 48 with it's larger tires and heavy duty construction handles my uneven terrain flawlessly without out scalping. The number of settings for deck hight definitely help with this . If you're looking for a zero turn with quality construction, that if maintained properly should last decades definitely check out Gravely. I'm glad I did !

I was in the market earlier this year for my first ZT mower for my 3.5 acre residential lot. My property is "rugged" to say the least - lots of elevation changes, trees, rocks, and rough areas. Not the manicured golf course-like property they typically show in tractor ads. After months of research and visits to local dealers, my wife and were about to pull the trigger on a Hustler Raptor SD. On a last-minute lark, we visited a dealer at a neighboring town that carried Gravely, Ariens, Toro, and Ferris, non of which we had looked at before. After several questions, the dealer pointed us at the new 2017 Gravely HD. This was a big step up feature-wise from the Raptor SD - more comparable to the Hustler Fastrak, but about $600 less expensive than the Fastrak promotion that was going on at the time. Kawasaki engine, very heavy duty frame, 10 gauge deck, 22x10 drive tires, ROPS capable, HydroGear 3100 commercial transmission. We were sold, adding a promotional package that included ROPS, lights, and hitch for another $200.

I have not been using this unit for very long, so cannot speak to long-term reliability/durability. Howerver, it has more than exceeded my expectations performance-wise. Outstanding speed, power, traction, maneuverability, and cut quality. I am very impressed. I am really surprised these things are not more popular than they are, given I don't see much on the market that competes feature and reputation-wise with this particular model at this price point.

One note of caution. While the ROPS provides an added layer of protection (I have a 10' deep dry creek that runs across the front of my property, which I steer clear of), it can also be a hazard in itself. On her first day mowing my wife caught the roll bar on an overhanging tree branch, and almost sent the unit over backwards. We now mow all the open areas of our property with ROPS and seatbelt in place, and then lower the roll bar to mow under low hanging trees.

I cut about 5-6 yards for close friends and family for extra income. I purchased this mower because it was built like a commercial mower without the huge price tag (or so I thought). I bought it new off the showroom floor in March of 2016. It now does not even have 100 hours on it and so far I have had to replace the throttle cable (it kept sticking), a leaky valve cover gasket, the deck belt consistently fell off when it had less than 10 hours on it. And the dealer says they have leveled my deck twice, but it still sits noticeably higher in the front than in the back. I would choose any other brand next time for the money spent (almost $6k).

I just purchased the new 2017 gravely ZT HD 52 with the Kawasaki engine and wow it's a really nice mower.really like the new style and the larger tires and comfortable seat.the mower is built really well.strong frame and deck as well.I looked it over very well before I made my decision over other brands and gravely just had what I was really looking for in mower.like the 3 year no hour limit warranty.only grip I'd say about it is the new gas tank.no big deal but it's mounted under the seat and no actual gauge just a window view right below the front part of the seat and it's hard to tell how much gas is in it.but other than that gravely hit a home run with the new 2017 line up.I would definitely recommend it to anyone.thanks gravely!

I've got a 2 1/2 acre yard that is rough! A lot of trees, hilly, muddy, not stuff you want to mow. I was using a John deer tractor and the front axle broke in half. I was looking at a Toro time utter for the price, but after the John deer broke in half I decided I needed a beefier model rather than replace the mower in 2 years. I have 20 hours on it and it has been awesome. Cut my time 75 percent between mowing faster (and much higher quality) and cutting way down on my weed eating. My first mow should have been a commercial for gravely. A lot of brush and hills. No problems.
